Though my objection is largely insignificant in practical use, it does propose a more substantial philosophical distinction. When considering animals and their desires, we should always be mindful that what we think we see is only an interpretation. And, while considering the desires of anything other than yourself is always an act of interpretation, we should be extra mindful to the imperfection in our communication with animals. The possibility is always open that something we thought a species to be okay with is actually at a detriment to them. Our position as steward of the environment should also be permitted and encouraged. Attempts to equally consider an animal’s desires should not be allowed to run to an end that ultimately hurts said animal. An example being over-feeding a dog we can see is already well fed.
